123rd Spindletop Anniversary Celebration

Date: Saturday, Jan. 13, 10 a.m. - 5 p.m.
Location: Spindletop Gladys City Boomtown Museum

The 123rd Spindletop Anniversary event at Spindletop Gladys City Boomtown Museum is taking place on Jan. 13 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Attendees can enjoy historical skits, demonstrations from the Beaumont Amateur Radio Club, musical guests, gusher re-enactments, and food trucks.

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration

Date: Tuesday, Jan. 16, 12:45 - 2:00 p.m.
Location: Setzer Student Center, Live Oak Ballroom B

Please join the LU Office of Strategic Initiatives as we celebrate the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The guest speaker is Judge Naomi Showers Doyle. The theme is "Embracing the Dream: Empowering the Next Generation." Everyone is welcome to attend.

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service

Date: Saturday, Jan. 20, 7 a.m. - noon

The purpose of the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service is to encourage all Americans to volunteer to improve their communities. Holocaust Portraits of Survival

Date(s): Monday, Jan. 22 through Friday, Jan. 26, 8 a.m. - 5 p.m.
Location: Mary & John Gray Library Lobby

In commemoration of International Holocaust Remembrance Day, The LU Office of Strategic Initiatives is hosting Portraits of Survival which features modern day portraits of Holocaust survivors. Next to each photo is a card telling the survivor’s story and how they came to rebuild their life.

Suicide Walk
Register for the Out of the Darkness Suicide Prevention Walk

Date: Saturday, Feb 24, 9 - 11 a.m.
Location: Setzer Student Center

Out of the Darkness
campus walks are part of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention's student fundraising series, designed to engage youth and adults in the fight to prevent suicide. Walk to honor a loved one, or to bring awareness to the cause. Family and friends are welcome.

Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program Seeking Volunteers

Deadline: Saturday, Jan. 20

The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program is looking for student volunteers for the 2024 tax preparation sites on campus and the Neighborhood Resource Center on Gulf Street in Beaumont. The VITA program is a free program that provides tax filing to individuals who had a total household income of $64,000 or less during 2023. VITA is also seeking IRS-certified tax preparers. Certification clases will be held on the LU campus on Saturday, Jan. 20. Please contact the LU Office of Strategic Initiatives at (409) 880-7169 for more information.

ACUE Opportunity for Faculty: Deadline Approaching

Deadline: Sunday, Jan. 14, 11:59 p.m.

The LU Center for Teaching and Learning Enhancement is offering faculty two micro-credential courses in Spring 2024 funded by Lamar University at no cost to current faculty. To register for this opportunity or for more information, visit Lamar's ACUE portal by Jan. 14 at portal.acue.org/pages/lamar. Click the "apply now" button to register.

LU Post Office Closed for MLK Day

Date: Monday, Jan. 15

The LU post office (window sales area only) will be closed Monday, Jan. 15 in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day. All other services will remain open. The post office will resume full service on Tuesday, Jan. 16.

2024 David J. Beck Fellowship Application Deadline Extended

Date: Tuesday, Jan. 16, 2024, 5:00 p.m.

The 2024 David J. Beck Fellowship application will remain open until Jan. 16, 2024. Faculty and staff are encouraged to motivate students you know to apply for this prestigious fellowship. Please visit the website for the application requirements and award information.

LU Center for Resiliency Welcomes 2024 Summit Participants

Deadline: Saturday, Jan. 20, 2024, 5 p.m.

The Lamar University Center for Resiliency hosts an annual Research Summit, and we are now accepting presentation abstracts across all colleges. We are searching for moderators, panelists and presenters. If interested, please contact Teressa Robertson via email at teressa.robertson@daikuan918.com.

Registration Open for Thesis Dissertation Workshop

Deadline: Friday, Feb. 2, 12:00 p.m.

Students in their final thesis or dissertation course must register for a brief asynchronous workshop provided by the LU College of Graduate Studies. Complete the form at the linked website so we can be in touch with you and assist with finalization of a document ready for required ProQuest publication.

Graduate Research Conference Deadline Extended

Deadline: Thursday, Feb. 15, 12:00 p.m.

The deadline is extended to Feb. 15 for submissions to the Graduate Research Conference to be held on March 28 in the Setzer Center. The conference will focus on AI, but there are open topics and sessions from all fields of inquiry.
